Message of the Week “Joseph Meets His Brothers: The First Encounter!” by Pastor George Gnade

“Joseph Meets His Brothers: The First Encounter!”
In Genesis 42, after over 20 years, Joseph—now ruler of Egypt—encounters his brothers who sold him into slavery. They come to buy grain during the famine but do not recognize him. Joseph experiences mixed emotions: love, anger, and a key question: “Can I trust them?” The chapter shows how he tests them.
1. “Why do you just keep looking at each other?” (Gen. 42:1) Jacob urges his sons to stop staring and act—go buy food in Egypt. God opens doors of opportunity, but we must walk through them. Jesus taught: “Ask… seek… knock” (Matt. 7:7). God does His part; we must do ours.
2. “Where did YOU come from?” (Gen. 42:7) Joseph questions his brothers harshly to test them and learn about their father and younger brother Benjamin. He keeps Simeon as hostage and demands they return with Benjamin. Application: God tests us by placing us in similar situations to check if we have truly changed and learned from past sins (1 Pet. 1:6-7). The question probes: Have you become better?
3. “Did I not tell you not to sin against the lad?” (Gen. 42:22) Reuben reminds his brothers of their guilt over Joseph. They realize their current distress is the consequence of their past sin. Principle: “Be sure your sin will find you out” and “You reap what you sow” (Gal. 6:7). Yet there is hope—through repentance, forgiveness, and God’s mercy. Paul, once the “chief of sinners,” urges us to forget what lies behind and press forward in Christ (Phil. 3:13-14).
4. “What is this that God has done to us?” (Gen. 42:28) The brothers discover their money returned in their sacks and fear God is punishing them. In reality, Joseph was showing them kindness and grace. Application: We often blame God when He is actually blessing us. The Gospel shows God reaching out to us first with forgiveness and restoration—not cheap grace, but a call to real change.
